Industry News – Ernst Benz Limited Edition Centennial

Ernst Benz Limited has designed two Swiss made limited edition automatic watches that feature the Wright Flyer in recognition of the anniversary of the Wright brothers’ first flight, Dec. 17, 1903. A portion of the sales proceeds of these watches benefits the First Flight Centennial Foundation, which manages the Wright Brothers National Memorial located in Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

Both watches share the massive 47mm diameter size that is the signature of the Ernst Benz watch line. The solid gold centennial watch sells for $15,000, and is limited to 100 serially numbered pieces. The watch is fitted with an anti-reflective domed sapphire crystal. The back is secured with eight solid gold screws and features a sapphire crystal exhibition window to showcase the finely decorated movements as well as an engraved image of the Wright Flyer. The 22mm wide watch strap is made of hand-stitched black alligator skin with a gold deployment clasp.

Buyers of the solid gold edition also receive a 1/24th scale hand-carved, museum quality model of the Wright Flyer.

The stainless steel centennial watch sells for $1,295, and is limited to 1,903 pieces. Each watch is machined from a solid block of 316L stainless steel, and finished by hand. Watches are serially numbered 0001 to 1903. The case back is engraved with the raised image of the Wright Flyer in flight. The 22mm watch bracelet is made of solid stainless steel links.

Both Limited Edition Centennial watches are available through authorized Ernst Benz dealers nationwide as well as through a number of aviation-related enterprises such as aero museums, flight shops, etc. Several aviation-related organizations have already reserved specific edition numbers with the plan to auction these watches at fundraising events or for use as gifts to luminaries attending the numerous Centennial events planned for 2003.
