Installment 1: Arrival in Zurich and a Visit with Paul Gerber

by Michael Sandler

July 2006

Saturday and Sunday June 10 and 11 were travel days, as participants on this year's tour made their way to Zurich, Switzerland from North America, Europe and Asia. In all, 19 guests and 3 guides made the journey. Our visits included Paul Gerber, IWC, Omega, Girard-Perregaux, Ulysse Nardin,
Renaud & Papi, A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, and more.

Since Sunday was basically a free day before we all gathered for dinner in the evening, a few of us decided to take a little walking tour of Zurich. We were thrilled to have long-time TZer and moderator Hans Zbinden as our guide. Zurich is a beautiful city, and we had absolutely amazing weather.

Of course, our walk through Zurich wouldn't be complete if we didn't stop at a watch store (or ten!). Because it was Sunday, the stores were closed, but the faceprints on the windows evidence our visits.

After walking for a while, we decided to stop for lunch. A little sampling is shown below: steak salad and veal sausage with potatoes...

After lunch, we headed back to the hotel for a little rest before our official welcome dinner that evening.

Part I of our group, listed clockwise from lower left: Ed Loebl, David Loebl, James Dowling, Chris Ip (hidden), Jackson Hioe Wei, Jim Johnson, Beatrix Tirkanits (hidden), Rollin Daniel, David Danielson, Patrice Mangum. Apologies for missing Terry Mangum. Obviously I'm better at taking photos of watches than of people. ;-)

Part II of our group, listed clockwise from lower left: Alexander Guzinski, Alan Ross, Rick Miller, Creighton Byrd, Jonathan Ziegler, Steven Speech, Alec Dawson and Scott Erie. Apologies for missing Madi Guzinski and Nick Lerescu. Again....I need practice as a photographer!

After a tasty dinner and good conversation, we ended the day in anticipation of the start of the tour on Monday morning.
