SWIS Luncheon – Redwood City, California

April 27, 2002

by Mike Disher

Not to be outdone by last week’s Beverly Hills event, Nor. Cal WIS attended a wonderful luncheon on April 27 at Fabbros in Redwood City. Special thanks to event organizers Marvin Arnold and Larry Seiden – they did their usual great job!

The festivities got under way at 11:30, and we met once again in a private room. Approximately 40 people attended, and the assemblage of timepieces at this event was particularly impressive.

First up on the schedule was a series of drawings to see who would win door prizes, which included Lange and IWC videos, a Lange golf umbrella, Breitling and Bell & Ross golf caps, several copies of Wristwatch Annual 2002, leather watch cases, and a generous number of Ulysse Nardin key chains.

Next up, Steve Taylor gave a slide presentation about his trip to the Basel and Geneva shows, and his visits to the Zenith and Roger Dubuis factories. We got “behind the scenes” looks at both manufactories. The debate that has existed in some circles about whether Dubuis manufacturers their own movements was resolved once and for all, as we saw several slides of Dubuis’ impressive machines, as well as main plates and many other movement components being cut and finished.

After the presentation, it was back to watch talk, including reminiscences of trips to Basel and Geneva – many who attended on Saturday were in Switzerland earlier this month for the shows. We finally wrapped up about 3 p.m. As is always the case when WIS get together, it was a wonderful afternoon.

And now, some images from the day…
